It was announced on Thursday 09 December 2010 that the Sony state of the art technology centre in Wales has secured a GBP2million investment to bring new business to the site which will create fifty new jobs. The investment was won against stiff competition throughout Sony European operations. The new business includes the manufacture of the next generation high definition broadcast products, the centralisation of the Sony European professional product customer service functions and the start of a development and sales operation for education and learning products. The new multi-formatted hand built professional camcorders are regarded as the most advanced on the market and the Sony Pencoed Technology Centre has been inundated with orders from major broadcasting organisations throughout Europe.
The Pencoed facility is supplying two versions of the camcorder across the globe, with key markets in the UK, mainland Europe, the Baltic States, the Middle East, Australia and New Zealand. This latest investment, which has been supported by the Welsh Assembly Government, seals Pencoed Technology Centre’s reputation as a centre of excellence within the Sony Corporation. The plant manufactures forty different broadcast cameras including High Definition, Standard Definition and 3D. It also produces all the associated peripheral products for the systems including control units, remote controls and master set up units for use in studios and outside broadcast trucks.
Products manufactured at Pencoed have filmed FIFA’s 2010 soccer World Cup in South Africa and more recently the 2010 Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor in both HD and 3D, forming part of the launch of Sky’s first 3D channel in the UK. It is the only facility in the world producing a 7.5 inch Organic LED viewfinder for broadcast cameras which is considered the best available in the market. Sony Pencoed is also the Corporation’s European Centre for Service for all consumer and professional products.
The latest business captured at the Welsh plant involves the full broadcast portfolio of products for high level service support for all European customers, complementing the current array of skills and providing an opportunity for additional highly capable technical personnel to join the growing operation. Further sustainability for the Sony facility at Pencoed has arrived with the opening of a sales arm aimed at providing education learning solution development. This is a first for the team at Pencoed and Sony is combining its expertise from both consumer and professional business to move into the education sector, providing video capture and digital communication solutions for enhanced learning practises. Sony Pencoed is now at the forefront of this new business market.
There are currently more than 500 people working at the Pencoed site, 420 of whom are directly employed by Sony. << Go Back
