London is unique in being the first European capital city to have a Sustainable Industries Park. A deal has been struck by the London Thames Gateway Development Corporation, LTGDC, for its first energy from waste facility at the London Sustainable Industries Park, SIP, in Dagenham, East London. The announcement on 11 March 2009 means that London is the first capital city in Europe to have a Sustainable Industries Park.
LTGDC, the Government’s lead regeneration agency for East London, is creating the UK’s largest concentration of environmental industries and technologies in Dagenham. Waste management firm Cyclamax, will build its fourth – and flagship facility – on a 3.5ha site at the London SIP. The 100,000 tonne capacity gasification plant will produce up to 15 mega watts of energy a year, providing enough power for up to 20,000 homes. It will divert commercial waste that would otherwise have gone to landfill, including non recyclable waste from offices, restaurants and retailers.
Environmental technology businesses are expected to be worth GBP45bn to the UK economy by 2016. With its London Sustainable Industries Park LTGDC is establishing a benchmark for environmental technology business parks and creating a model for other cities in the UK and beyond to follow. LTGDC has already invested GBP19m and has committed a further GBP27.5m, breathing new life and opportunities into London’s industrial heartland. Uniquely, environmental businesses locating here will also have the benefit of global research and world class expertise from the Thames Gateway Institute for Sustainability which is being set up at the London SIP. The Institute will bring together leading businesses, academic institutions and research organisations creating a hub aimed at bringing commercial solutions to reduce the negative impacts on the environment quickly to market and spread learning on the most effective means to deliver sustainable living.
The 25ha SIP is in an exceptional location with excellent transport links and access to raw materials, markets and a skilled manufacturing workforce. The London SIP will take the lead in enabling occupants to use waste materials from one company to provide power or raw materials for another, providing cost savings, minimising on site waste and encouraging innovation. Already located at the London SIP is Closed Loop, which opened for business in June 2008, and is the first company in the world to recycle plastic bottles back into food grade packaging. Its first six months have been so successful that it already has plans for further expansion.
Cyclamax intends to lodge a planning application for its plant this summer and expect to be operational in early 2012.
Mark Bradbury, Deputy Director of Development at LTGDC, said: “The London Sustainable Industries Park represents a major opportunity for London’s environmental technology businesses. It provides access to Europe’s largest urban area and has an unrivalled source of raw materials and a multi-billion pound marketplace on the doorstep.”
Tony Watkins, Managing Director at Cyclamax, said: “We’re delighted to be the latest company to join the London Sustainable Industries Park. We have chosen the Park in Dagenham because of its great location and support for occupiers. It also offers us exciting opportunities to develop synergies with the Thames Gateway Institute for Sustainability and other occupiers, to share knowledge and develop real solutions to the UK’s clean energy requirements. London Sustainable Industries Park is in the heart of a major regeneration area and provides us with raw materials for our business whilst providing a major benefit to the broader community.”
John Williams, Chief Executive at Gateway to London, said: “Cyclamax’s plans are proof of London Thames Gateway’s position as the number one location for businesses working in environmental technologies and we are seeing huge interest from companies who want to join the region’s burgeoning market. The London Sustainable Industries Park is the core element of this proposition and working with LTGDC we look forward to building on the Cyclamax success and securing even more investment into this prime location.”
