Leading figures from across the energy sector descended on Manchester on the night of 17 June 2010 for a prestigious black tie dinner at the Hilton Deansgate Hotel, hosted by writer, columnist and presenter Guy Browning. The event was the Inaugural Energy Innovation Awards, the brainchild of Cheshire’s world class Energy Innovation Centre which attracted entries from across the UK and Europe and plans are already in place to build upon this in 2011.
The awards were supported by a host of leading organisations including the Northwest Regional Development Agency, European Regional Development Fund, Department for Energy and Climate Change, EA Technology Group, EA Technology Ventures, Energy Networks Association, Electricity North West, Envirolink Northwest, IET, Scottish Power, Scottish and Southern Energy and UKTI. Companies from Merseyside, Greater Manchester and the Republic of Ireland were among the award winners.
Merseyside firm E-Energy Enterprise Limited scooped the ‘New Energy Generation Award’ after impressing judges with its ‘E-Engine’, which allows low temperature waste heat to be used to generate electricity in many thousands of industrial processes. Greater Manchester firm Arago Technology, a joint venture between the University of Manchester and EPL Composite Solutions Limited, collected the ‘Existing Performance Improvement Award’ for its unique technology which combines high voltage expertise and composite structure engineering.
Two companies were honoured in the ‘Consumer Benefit Award’ category. Merseyside based Furlong Innovations walked away with the ‘Consumer Benefit Award’ for its cost effective CombiSave technology, which provides 'instant' hot water to households with combination boilers, eliminating waiting time for the water to run hot. And Greater Manchester green property lettings company Beech Properties was awarded a Commendation for its contribution to reducing carbon emissions.
‘Best International Trade Award’ went to FMC-Tech Ltd, of County Clare, Ireland, whose real time network monitoring equipment is a fundamental component of the Smart Grid schemes. And a Commendation in this category was handed to Bosnia and Herzegovina firm Turbina IPD Ltd, for its vibration free vertical axis wind turbine, which can operate in variable wind directions.
The highlight of the Awards, the ‘Energy Innovation Grand Prix Award‘, was awarded to the company judges believed to have shown the greatest overall innovation. This went to Merseyside’s E-Energy Enterprise Limited, while Arago Technology, from Greater Manchester, received a Commendation. << Go Back
