Northumberland County Council, working in partnership with Northumberland Business Services Ltd and One North East, announced on 17 May 2010 that it has secured funding to develop a programme of enterprise activities across the County. After many months of preparation led by the Council a bid has secured just under GBP4m for a ‘Putting Enterprise into Place’ project.  The funding has been received from the European Regional Development Fund, Working Neighbourhoods Fund, Local Enterprise Growth Initiative and Northumberland Business Services Ltd.

The ERDF programme is bringing over GBP250m into the North East to support innovation, enterprise and business support across the region and will help create and safeguard 28,000 new jobs, start 3,000 new businesses and increase the region’s productivity by GBP1.1bn per annum. The project will make a major contribution to creating an ‘enterprise surge’ in the North East by encouraging more people to develop enterprising skills and attitudes, particularly those in disadvantaged areas.  Specific focus will be placed on Berwick, Amble and the South East of the County with the project being especially keen to work with people in those areas using enterprise coaches.  These coaches will work with people who have the potential to become self employed.

The overall aim of the Putting Enterprise into Place project is to:
(i) Increase the number of residents throughout Northumberland wishing to  explore their ‘enterprise potential’;
(ii) Increase the number of residents throughout Northumberland to be  enterprise ready and become self employed or start their own business;
(iii) Assist small and medium enterprises by increasing the numbers of local businesses winning contracts through public procurement.

This will be achieved through an enterprise coaching service, providing additional enterprise coaches to cover the whole of Northumberland; activities to simulate enterprise amongst younger adults and workshops to assist individuals to explore business ideas.

Led by Northumberland County Council (NCC) and working in partnership with key providers, the project seeks to assist economic growth throughout the County but will particularly target Northumberland’s disadvantaged areas referenced within the North East England ERDF Competitiveness Programme 2007-13: Commissioning Document of Blyth, Wansbeck, Amble and Berwick.
