Alan Clarke, One North East Chief Executive and Chairman of the Corus Response Group, welcomed the 27 August 2010 news about the potential sale of the Corus Teesside Cast Products business to SSI of Thailand. The Corus plant, ultimate owner Tata, was mothballed earlier in the year with the loss of 1,000 jobs when an international consortium reneged on a long term contract to buy its products.

Mr Clarke said: “This is wonderful news for the business, the local area and wider North East economy. The primary aim of the response group was always to support Corus in the sale of the TCP business to see steelmaking return to Teesside and to support redundant workers. SSI is a globally renowned steel producer and the MOU is a highly significant step towards steelmaking beginning once again on Teesside, potentially by the middle of next year. Corus are confident that the transaction, if successful, would represent a good industrial fit for Corus, the Tees Valley and SSI. The quality jobs that would result would provide a massive boost for the local economy which would also be boosted through the financial benefits that would flow into the supply chain.”

The Corus Response Group comprises: One North East, Corus management, trade union representatives, Redcar MP Ian Swales, Redcar and Cleveland Council, Learning and Skills Council, Job Centreplus, Business and Enterprise North East, CBI, North East Chamber of Commerce, EEF Northern, Government Office for the North East and Tees Valley Unlimited.
